Protectors and Promoters

One thing that can take a day from good to great is faithful friendship.  I have found that there are two kinds of friends, protectors and promoters.  The Bible says it this way: Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends. - Proverbs 17:9

Are you one who protects your friends when they make mistakes or do you go on a campaign to promote and share all of their failures?  The difference is huge.

As I think about the best friends I've had in life, they were also the best at protecting my shortcomings.  The friends I could go without are the ones who felt the need to share all my failures with everyone they came in contact with.

If you struggle with being a promoter recognize that the end result of betraying confidences is broken relationships and that will not change until you become a protector.

The great thing is that all of us have the ability to be a great friend, and a hallmark of lasting friendships is the ability to protect.  In every relationship whether its family, friends or co-workers ask yourself if you are a protector or a promoter.

How have you seen these two types of friends play out in your life?  Please share in the comments below.
