Sound familiar?

You’ve learned a lot. Passing it on is a different skill.

Experience alone doesn’t make you a good mentor. Reflection does. When you can name what an experience taught you, you can help someone else apply it.

  • You’d like to mentor someone, but you’re not sure where to start.
  • Your advice gets nods, but nothing changes.
  • You end up solving problems your people should learn to solve.
  • You’re not sure your experience is worth sharing.

Who it’s for

  • Supervisors and managers developing emerging leaders
  • Experienced professionals and business owners who want to give back
  • Emerging leaders looking for a mentor and a plan

Not an enterprise talent program. This is for one mentor and one learner, with one clear area of growth.

“I have known Drew for several years and have witnessed how effective he is in training, motivating and energizing leaders and teams at all levels of an organization.”

Why I wrote this

A note from Drew

Fort Worth, Texas

Drew T. Jackson smiling, in a close portrait

Dear friend,

At nineteen, newly married, I started volunteering with young people because I wanted to help. My first jobs weren’t glamorous. We cleaned up the dishes and the leftover chips and queso.

Over time we were asked to teach and lead. Looking back, I see how much I gained from people who gave me a chance, modeled leadership, and helped me grow before I knew what I could become.

Mentorship is not a ceremony. It is an investment that should change the way the learner thinks and acts.

Years later, I remember preparing to meet an accomplished entrepreneur in Fort Worth. I reviewed my questions and my progress since our last talk, because I wanted him to see his time was producing something.

That’s why I’m giving this away. You don’t need to be famous, retired, or at the top of the org chart to be useful to someone. Start with one person.

Best regards,

Drew

A quick win

Try this today: write your lessons down

From Chapter 1. A story tells what happened. A lesson is what can travel to someone else’s situation.

  1. List three experiences.Pick moments that taught you something that mattered: a mistake, a hard decision, a turnaround.
  2. Finish the sentence.“Because of that experience, I learned to ...”
  3. Make it transferable.“I once lost a client” is a story. “I learned to clarify expectations in writing before starting” is a lesson someone else can use.
  4. Offer one.Share one lesson with someone who’s facing that situation now.

“I can honestly say that he has been a significant part of my professional and personal growth. Drew offers a down-to-earth, but powerful approach to coaching.”

No catch. Nothing to buy.

Why give it away?

When I was a teenager, my family moved from California to Texas. The day we arrived, my aunt’s dog destroyed my new shoes. My cousin’s grandfather noticed I was discouraged and handed me $100 to buy another pair. I still remember it. My dream is to help you live yours, and giving this away is one small way I pass that kindness on.
