People don’t experience your intentions. They experience you.
What’s It Like to Be on the Other Side of Me? is a short, practical guide to self-awareness for leaders. Ten chapters and four worksheets help you see the gap between what you meant and what people felt, and close it.

Sound familiar?
Good intentions don’t always land the way we meant them.
You meant to be efficient. They experienced impatient. You meant to be direct. They heard harsh. Most leaders can explain what they meant. Fewer ask what it was like on the other side.
- A conversation went sideways and you’re still not sure why.
- Pressure brings out a version of you that you don’t love.
- Your team agrees in the meeting and does something else after.
- You want honest feedback, but people tell you what you want to hear.
Who it’s for
- Leaders and managers who want trust that holds up under pressure
- Professionals who want to communicate so people can hear them
- Anyone working on a relationship at work or at home
Not a personality test. The self-assessment is a reflection tool, not a diagnosis. The goal is one visible change people can notice.

Why I wrote this
A note from Drew
Fort Worth, Texas
Dear friend,
I once sent a professional email to someone I remembered from high school. I had adapted a message I’d sent to my mother, and I didn’t reread the closing. Days later I discovered I had signed it “Love.”
We laugh about that one. Most communication misses are quieter. We give a detailed answer to someone who wanted the bottom line, or move fast when someone needed us to slow down.
People do not experience our intentions. They experience our words, our tone, and our reactions.
In my emotional intelligence workshops I ask three questions: Why do I do what I do? Who shows up when I’m under pressure? And what is it like to be on the other side of me? This book walks through all three.
That’s why I’m giving it away. Ask the question. Listen to the answer. Choose one behavior to change. You don’t have to become a different person. You do have to become more intentional.
Best regards,
Drew

A quick win
Try this today: ask one question
From Chapter 5. When someone brings you a concern, find out what kind of help they want before you give it.
- Pause before you fix.Your first instinct may be to solve it. Hold that for a moment.
- Ask the question.“Do you want me to listen, help you solve this, or get involved directly?”
- Summarize before you respond.Say back what you heard and ask, “What did I miss?”
- Then help the way they asked. You’ll save time, and they’ll feel heard.

Why give it away?
When I was a teenager, my family moved from California to Texas. The day we arrived, my aunt’s dog destroyed my new shoes. My cousin’s grandfather noticed I was discouraged and handed me $100 to buy another pair. I still remember it. My dream is to help you live yours, and giving this away is one small way I pass that kindness on.
